Gov't consults over whelk stocks

Consideration given to closing areas post-season

Protecting Manx whelk stocks by imposing licences, and limiting catch.

The subject of a new Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture public consultation to make the fisheries industry more sustainable.

It says it's looking to better secure the industry's economy, as there's currently little protection for the species located in areas extending to 12 miles out to sea.

There are already restrictions up to three miles out to sea - but is that enough?

Well, DEFA has already consulted with the industry's whelk fishermen in turning over ideas to improve their stocks.

They suggest limiting the number of pots, closing certain areas when the season is over, and proposing an increase in minimum landing size.

Minister Geoffrey Boot says they're one of five major species fished for in Manx waters - and contribute real value to the industry.
