Government suffers fresh defeat over North and West Area Plan

Last-minute Treasury amendment sparks criticism before combined vote delivers set back for Cannan administration

Tynwald has rejected the North and West Area Plan, delivering another significant blow to the government only weeks after the proposal was first defeated by LegCo.

Today's sitting was marked by clear frustration among some members after Treasury tabled an amendment shortly before the combined vote.

While any member is entitled to bring forward an amendment at any stage, the timing drew strong criticism, with several MHKs describing it as 'inappropriate' and 'unhelpful'.

Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas voiced particular concern, arguing he did not have enough time to assess the implications or consult constituents.

He attempted to adjourn the debate so he could prepare his own amendments, branding the situation "ridiculous", though his move was unsuccessful.

The combined vote - requested by government after last month's loss - again failed to secure enough support across both branches.

The result means the Cabinet Office will now have to return to the drawing board, and it's unclear whether a revised North and West Area Plan will return to Tynwald before the next general election.
