Views of youngsters being sought on possible concept
A new 'child first' policy is being drafted by government to ensure the welfare and best interests of children are consistently taken into account when preparing public policies and services.
It's hoped such a concept could inform how government works in several areas including a focus on child safeguarding making policies recognising youngster's views differ from adults.
As part of the process the views of children are being sought during a month of engagement with children's groups and service providers.
Minister for the Cabinet Office, David Ashford says it's important to hear the voices of children in the design of the new policy:
Government says the definition of a 'Child First' policy differs depending on jurisdiction but 'broadly it encourages policymakers to ensure that children's voices are heard in decisions affecting them and to provide the best outcomes for the child.'
Among other potential focuses a policy of its type could have, government adds, includes supporting families who need support; supporting children's rights and thinking long-term for the best interest of childrens' futures.
