Give the kids ice cream, demands MHK

School menu changes coming in from today for new term

A Douglas MHK is demanding that locally produced ice cream remains on the primary school menu.

John Wannenburgh has told Education Minister, Daphne Caine that dropping the Davison's product for what are seen as healthier options is a mistake.

The menu changes come into today (3 September) as the new term starts.

But Mr Wannenburgh says there needs to be a rethink:

In her response to Mr Wannenburgh, Minister Caine said: "The new menu aims to improve eating habits as well as the dishes themselves - not setting the expectation of a daily lunchtime sweet treat. It will hopefully have knock on benefits in terms of children’s concentration in the afternoon, and their awareness of healthy food. I also hope that the improved ingredients will fill children up more than some of the previous menu’s dishes.

"The revised menu has the support of our local producers and suppliers, many of whom have worked very hard to improve the meals being served in our schools, as detailed in the announcement.

"So, in closing, while hopeful the food will be well received I am not deaf to the critical comments and concerns. This is an ongoing project and we will continually refine our approach by listening to all feedback. The new menu will commence on Wednesday alongside nutritional information / education for the pupils, and of course the primary meals team will monitor uptake and feedback, and food waste."
