Gas company offer 'an insult to residents' says pensioner

Ramsey MHK says it's an issue affecting other facilities as well not just Mayfield residents

Pensioners living in sheltered housing in Ramsey believe it's time 'someone takes a step forward and does something' to address the amount they are paying for gas.

In October Manx Radio reported that these residents, mostly aged above 70, are billed about £47 a week for gas, resulting in them paying close to £200 a month - even in the summer.

It's because Isle of Man Energy charges the Northern District Housing Committee, which is in charge of the Mayfield site, at a commercial rate instead of a residential rate.

The board are currently in talks with the gas company to change the rate that they are being charged at from commercial to residential, as it's currently the cheaper option.

Eric Corkish told Manx Radio while negotiations are taking place between the gas company and the board, some residents feel they are 'going around in a circle' and getting nowhere.

Chanelle Sukhoo has this report:

Manx Radio has contacted Isle of Man Energy and the Northern District Housing Board for comment.
