Former Manchester City footballer admits drink driving

3.5 times over the legal limit in Sulby

A former footballer who played for Manchester City has will be sentenced next year after admitting drink-driving.

Fifty-seven-year-old Richard William Holden, of Magher Drine in Peel, appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.

He admitted drink-driving in his Vauxhall Astra on 12 October in Sulby.

Prosecution advocate Barry Swain told the court police spotted Holden on Main Road in Sulby because he had an intermittent fault with his headlights.

When they pulled him over they noticed he smelled of alcohol and Holden told them he'd had three pints an hour before getting behind the wheel.

He was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters where testing equipment showed he was more than three and a half times over the legal alcohol limit.

Defence advocate Jim Travers asked for probation and medical reports to be prepared before Holden is sentenced.

Magistrates bailed Holden and he's next due to appear on 3 February next year.
