Five-year driving ban for man who crashed at roundabout

60-year-old was over three times the limit

A Douglas man has been banned from the road for five years after crashing his car at a roundabout whilst drunk.

Stewart Scott, of Peel Road, hit the vehicle on Lake Road after leaving Tesco at 3.40pm on 18 October.

The 60-year-old then parked his BMW in a nearby car park and went home; when police located him they found he was 'well over' three times the drink drive limit.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Scott’s advocate said his client had a ‘long history’ of alcoholism adding: “He sincerely regrets his actions. There is real remorse there.

“He’s very much let himself down once again in what he’s done.”

Imposing a six-month custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months, Magistrates told him: “We could have sent you to immediate custody.”

An 18-month suspended sentence supervision order was also imposed and Scott must pay prosecution costs of £125.

His driving ban will remain in place until he’s taken and passed and extended driving test and drink drive rehabilitation course.
