Five inshore marine zones established

DEFA plan to balance diverse interests

Five new conservation zones are to be established around the Island's coastline, to protect important marine species.

Commercial fishing will be banned in the zones, between the shore and three miles out to sea.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture says the scheme will balance leisure activities with recreational fishing, such as crab and lobster potting.  

Dredge and trawl fishing can continue within three miles of the shoreline outside the zones - with restricted access.

DEFA held a consultation on proposals for marine zones in the spring, which included a series of public meetings and drop-in sessions.

The department says fisheries and conservation interests have played a major role in shaping the new system.
