New ID system for cattle births begins

A new online identification and traceability system for the registration of cattle births, deaths and transfers has gone live.

It replaces outdated technology that's been in place for decades.

Cattle identification and traceability is a legal requirement across the Isle of Man, UK and EU. Once registered each calf is issued with a passport linked to a unique identification number displayed on its ear tags.

The first calf to be registered on the new system belongs to Richard Creer from Ballabunt Farm in Braddan, who described it as easy to use and real improvement for farmers going forward.

The new system has been under development at DEFA for five years and Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Amy Beckett thanked the team that's worked to bring it to fruition.

DEFA has hosted more than 100 local farmers at engagement events and workshops to talk them through the new system.
