Firefighters attend late night gorse fire at the Point of Ayre

Fire crews from Ramsey were called out last night to a gorse fire near the Point of Ayre.

Officers arrived on the scene shortly after 9:30pm to find a well-developed fire involving gorse and surrounding vegetation.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire to prevent further fire spread, though they say maintaining water supplies at the location proved challenging and supplies had to be reinforced by a crew from Douglas Station.

Dampening down the area to ensure there would be no reignition, crews stayed on the scene for around two hours.

The Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service are reminding people to avoid discarding cigarettes and matches in the countryside or lighting campfires and disposable barbecues near dry vegetation.

People are also being urged to ensure vehicles are not parked on long dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can cause ignition, and to report fires early by calling 999 and asking for the fire service.
