Facebook threats cost Douglas woman £400

37-year-old told woman 'You're dead'

Making threats to kill someone over Facebook has cost a Douglas woman £400.

Melanie Anne Freeland, of Hillside Avenue, called the woman via the social media platform on the evening of 3 July.

At Douglas Courthouse the 42-year-old admitted making annoying or persistent use of the public communications network.

The court heard Freeland was in ‘significant distress’ about money which had been given to the complainant from the father of her child.

She threatened her by saying: "I’m going to kill you" and "You’re dead" – the phone call was followed up by abusive messages.

Freeland’s advocate told the court: “She has no excuse for this,” adding: "She is truly, genuinely, remorseful and ashamed of her actions.”

Fining Freeland, and ordering her to pay prosecution costs of £50, Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks highlighted the irony of the case telling her: “Your behaviour ends up with you having less money in your hand.”
