Staff bitten and passer-by punched
Assaulting three people while trying to escape from prison means a teenager will have to serve another seven months in jail.
Eighteen-year-old Kyle Reece Wright appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.
Wright appeared for sentencing after previously pleading guilty to three assaults and a charge of attempting to escape lawful custody.
Prison staff took him to the Accident and Emergency unit of Noble’s Hospital on 29 April because he’d taken drugs, and Wright asked to go to the toilet.
After he finished, Wright refused to be put back in handcuffs, instead slipping free from two female prison officers and making a dash for the main doors.
He was wrestled to the ground, and during a struggle he bit both prison staff and kicked a passer-by who tried to assist in the face.
Wright’s advocate said the attempted escape was unplanned and incredibly unsophisticated and Mrs Hughes said it had been doomed to failure.
She jailed Wright for 18 weeks for each assault, to run concurrently, and 10 weeks for the attempted escape, to run consecutively.
