Statue of Pankhurst's mother to be erected in Laxey

A statue of Emmeline Pankhurst, a prominent figure in the suffragette movement, has been unveiled in Manchester this afternoon.

It's only the second life-size statue of a woman in the city, after Queen Victoria in 1901.

Pankhurst was the daughter of Sophia Goulden, who was also an active women's rights activist in her own right.

On the Island, campaigners want to see a statue of Goulden erected in Laxey - and the proposed designs were tweaked last month, as fundraising efforts continue.

She will now be portrayed brandishing a leaflet as opposed to a clenched fist, while a young Emmeline gazes upwards in a defiant pose.
