Ellan Vannin memorial 107 years on

Wreaths laid for those who lost their lives

The passengers and crew of Ellan Vannin, who lost their lives when the ship sank 107 years ago today, will be remembered this afternoon (Saturday).

A memorial service to the 35 who perished will be held at the Ellan Vannin memorial on West Quay in Ramsey, the spot from where the vessel set sail for England.

The smallest of the Steam Packet's fleet was hit by a ferocious storm on its passage to Liverpool on December the third, 1909.

Having crossed the Irish Sea in terrible conditions, she foundered and sank at the mouth of the River Mersey after being smashed by a massive wave.

There’ll be opportunities for wreaths to be laid and the names of all those who died will be read out from three o’clock.
