Eel grass expanding in Manx waters

Survey shows waters in good health

Eel or sea grass is flourishing in Manx waters.

It's found in four areas - Baie ny Carrickey, Laxey, Langness and Ramsey Bay Marine Nature Reserve.

At the Ramsey site, the underwater plant covers an area three times bigger than in 2011.

Eel grass helps clean the sea, as well as absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.

Its root system helps bind the seabed together.

The areas also provide a nursery for fish, crabs and lobsters.

Seeds from Ramsey Bay are to be harvested and sent to Swansea University for germination, to help restore some of Britain's lost sea grass beds.
