Drug driver was more than four times the legal limit

35-year-old's van also in a dangerous condition

A Laxey man who was caught behind the wheel of his van whilst more than four times over the legal drug driving limit will be sentenced next month.

James David Luton, of Agneash, was stopped by police on the Creg-ny-Baa Back Road just before 11.30pm on 4 August.

Officers who were following his van could smell cannabis – when they spoke to the 35-year-old they noted his eyes were glazed and he was drowsy.

He was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters; a search of his van recovered 5.1 grams of cannabis, with a street value of £102, as well as a number of defects with the brakes and clutch.

At Douglas Courthouse Luton admitted drug driving, having a vehicle in a dangerous condition and possession of cannabis; he also admitted a later offence of possessing cocaine on 26 November.

On that occasion police had seen him acting suspiciously in Villiers Lane in Douglas – when they searched him they found 0.6 grams of the Class A drug which was valued at £60.

A social enquiry report had been requested before he’s sentenced on 23 March; bail was continued until that date.
