Driving ban for drink driver who crashed whilst turning

69-year-old also fined £1,000

A pensioner from Sulby has been banned from driving for two years after crashing whilst almost double the legal limit.

Sixty-nine year old Robert Fraser Corlett, of Clenagh Road, hit another vehicle as he was turning off Queen’s Promenade in Ramsey.

When police arrived at the scene on 2 April he failed a roadside breath test and later, in interview, admitted he’d drank a glass of bourbon – containing three measures – earlier that morning.

Corlett admitted the offence at Douglas Courthouse – his advocate described it as a ‘particularly sad matter’ adding: “He genuinely didn’t believe he was over the legal limit – this is someone who has made a genuine mistake.”

Fining Corlett £1,000, and ordering him to pay £125 in prosecution costs, magistrates told him it was an ‘error of judgement’.
