Driving ban for Douglas man caught drug driving

33-year-old collided head-on with a car

A Douglas man has been banned from the road for two years after admitting drug driving.

Maxwell Timothy Dawson, of Ballabrooie Drive, lost control of his motorcycle on the Mountain Road on 25 October last year.

The 33-year-old was travelling towards the capital when his vehicle lost power and he swerved into oncoming traffic.

He collided head-on with a car and sustained 'serious injuries'.

Blood tests later showed he was over the legal limit for cannabis - he had 2.9 micrograms of cannabis per litre of blood; the legal limit is two.

His advocate told the court Dawson is a 'regular cannabis user' and had smoked the drug at around 10pm the night before.

He said: "He felt he would be under the limit to drive - this wasn't a wilful action by him."

He was also found to be driving with an expired provisional licence and no vehicle tax.

Fining Dawson £1,260, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £50, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood also told him he’d have to take, and pass, an extended driving test.
