Douglas man appears in court after being tasered by police

48-year-old charged with threatening violence against four officers

A Douglas man has appeared in court accused of threatening violence towards four-armed response officers who tasered him.

Ian Ronald Goldsmith, of Empire Terrace, was arrested on Sunday (20 August) at a property on Derby Square.

During an appearance at Douglas Courthouse the prosecutor told the court police had been called to a ‘domestic incident’ just after 10pm.

The 48-year-old was said to be slurring, swearing and ‘frothing at the mouth’ when officers spoke to him – he was reportedly holding a large metal bar and told officers: “I’m going to punch your heads in.”

Due to alleged non-compliance a taser was used but was ineffective – PAVA spray was used whilst he was being transported to Police Headquarters.

Mr Goldsmith has also been charged with possessing cannabis; bail was granted until his next court appearance on 5 September.
