Douglas Head granted conservation status

Follows overwhelming public support

Douglas Head has formally been designated as a conservation area, joining a further 20 across the Isle of Man.

The move has been confirmed by the Cabinet Office, following two public consultations, and makes it the tenth conservation area within the capital.

In the consultation held earlier this year, the majority of respondents were supportive - 92 percent supported the principle of a conservation area, 85 percent were in favour of the proposed boundary, and 70 percent of property occupiers written to directly by the Cabinet Office also approved.

Douglas City Council has welcomed the move, saying its 'distinctive character and setting make it an important part of Douglas’ history and identity'.

The designation does not prevent development, but it does mean that 'development can only take place where it is appropriate and contributes to the preservation and enhancement of the area’s historic character and appearance'.
