Minister says plans are a 'proportionate' and interim measure

Tynwald has heard more details about proposals for changes to bus facilities in Douglas.

The Department of Infrastructure plans to install bus facilities on Victoria Street and at the Bottleneck car park - you can find out more HERE.

The planned Lord Street development includes a new bus terminal, but Mr Crookall said the government cannot rely on when that work will be completed.

He also told members that the motion did not commit any money to the plans and that his department will have to come back with a request for funding if it proceeds.

The minister said the interim measures would not meet all requirements for a bus terminal, such as toilets and catering, but said it was a 'practical plan' ahead of the Lord Street development:

Members criticised the plans both for the time they have taken and for failing to meet the requirements of what Tynwald had asked for.

However, Mr Crookall again insisted the plans were proportionate.

If it returns to Tynwald, the plan is expected to cost £735,000 and the department will also need to seek planning approval.

Responding to a question from Onchan MHK Rob Callister, Mr Crookall said the area was not a flood risk and suggested Mr Callister was incorrect that the area had previously flooded.

In February, Douglas Council advised motorists not to park in the Bottleneck following coastal overtopping.
