Clampdown to protect nesting birds
Dog walkers in the north of the Island are being warned they must keep their pets on a lead at the Ayres Nature Reserve - or face a stiff fine.
The clampdown applies throughout the entire reserve from 1st April until 31 July, to protect ground nesting birds.
Wardens at the Ayres will be working with police to enforce the bylaw - those who allow their animals free rein could face fines of up to £2,500.
There's concern about a decline in the number of curlew, lapwing, skylark, oystercatcher, Artic tern and plover, which lay their eggs on heathland and dunes at the Ayres.
