Kathryn Fowler achieves world class instructor exam results

A diver from Castletown has achieved one of the highest honours in scuba instruction, after getting the best exam grades in the world.

Kathryn Fowler has become only the second Manx diver to qualify as a British Sub Aqua Club National Instructor, earning the Wilkinson Sword Award for the top instructor exam performance in 2025.

She was recognised at the Go Diving Show after completing a year-long assessment covering more than 20 modules, from dive planning to coaching skills.

The Wilkinson Sword trophy returns to the Island's Discover Diving club for the second year in a row, after Michelle Haywood won the accolade in 2024.

Michelle says “The look of surprise on Kathryn’s face when her name was called out was just priceless, although for me it wasn’t a surprise.  Throughout her instructor journey Kathryn has shown what a naturally talented coach and mentor she is, with meticulous and considered preparation supported by her excellent personal diving practical skills and theory knowledge.

"It just goes to show that the amazing diving in the Isle of Man really does help generate excellent divers who can become excellent instructors.  I am so thrilled that Kathryn’s exceptional instructor abilities have been recognized in this Award.”

Kathryn becomes National Instructor number 281 joining only 283 National Instructors in over 70 years of the British Sub Aqua Club.
