Director of Public Transport responds to concerns over bendy buses

The Island's director of public transport has responded to people's concerns about the possibility of up to 100 school children standing on 'bendy buses'.

Bus Vannin is considering trialling the vehicles in the new year, having done so before in 2009, and if successful, plans to use them for school runs.

The proposal has attracted many negative responses on media website comment sections and social media sites, with people worried about the number of children who could end up standing on them.

Some pointed out they had been removed from London's roads this year by London Mayor Boris Johnson, who said they'd been 'clogging up' the city's streets.

But Mr Longworth says they meet all current safety standards:

Seat belts will be compulsory on school buses in Wales from 2014 under legislation passed by the Welsh assembly. York City Council plans to bring them in next year.
