More than a thousand people with conditon on IOM
Increasing awareness and encouraging understanding of dementia are the motivation behind a series of events being held next week.
Five days of activities get underway on Monday, including a cinema trip, games at the NSC and a disco.
They've been organised by the Island's Older Persons' Mental Health Service, for Dementia Awareness Week.
The conditon affects more than a thousand people on the Island.
Whilst highlighting the issue, the week will also provide a chance for those with dementia and their carers to relax and enjoy the company of others with experiences similar to their own.
The activities are as follows:
Monday 20 May at 12pm: The Decaf train (with Manx Decaf, the dementia cafe charity), leaving Douglas on a run to Castletown, serving a two-course meal and coffee.
Tuesday 21 May 2-4 pm: Drop-in afternoon tea at Noble’s hospital staff restaurant Thie Bee. Staff from Older Persons Mental Health Service will answer any questions about dementia.
Wednesday 22 May 2-4pm: An activity afternoon at The National Sports Centre. Activities will range from chair-based exercises to walking football. Refreshments will be available
Thursday 23 at 2pm: Cinema afternoon at Broadway Cinema, Villa Marina. The film will be ‘Singing in the Rain’. Tickets direct from the Villa at £4.00. The Villa is wheelchair-friendly but wheelchair seats will be limited.
Friday 24th from 2-4 pm: Disco at the Heron public house, Anagh Coar with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s with fancy dress optional. The DJ is Dr Chris Jagus, consultant psychiatrist.
