IOM Creameries is discharging whey into Douglas Bay

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is working to establish the 'relative impact' of a pipeline discharging into Douglas Bay.

In a statement to Manx Radio, Environmental Health Officials say they are reviewing technologies to allow whey disposed at sea from the Isle of Man Creameries to be 'put to good use'.

During last week's (11 May) Environment and Infrastructure Policy Review Committee Hearing, Chair Rob Callister commented on bathing quality in Douglas bay.

Under 2006's EU directive, water standards at Summerhill, Central and Broadway have consistently been rated 'poor' for the past decade.

DEFA Minister Geoffrey Boot, said his department is 'working hard for a solution' with the Isle of Man Creameries, a UNESCO Biosphere Partner.

DEFA, along with Manx Utilities, plans to conduct a sampling regime and marine dispersal analysis to help wider infrastructure planning.

The Department is finding it hard however to make a case which is acceptable for all key stakeholders.
