DEFA proposes plastic bag levy

Officials will look into benefits and implications

A proposed plastic bag levy will be considered by the Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture.

DEFA officials are vowing to investigate how a voluntary levy can be introduced here by assessing potential benefits and implications.

Departmental member, MHK Tim Baker, told Tynwald there's already been discussions with the Manx Wildllife Trust today (Tues).

He said similar schemes have been looked at elsewhere and hinted any proceeds can support environmental and energy efficiency projects.

Mr Baker insisted the Island's UNESCO status should underpin the move.

Previously, Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson asked members if a levy of 5p or 10p on plastic bags can be introduced.

He said the income generated could be ring-fenced to benefit the environment.
