Timepiece sells for £3.6m at Sotheby's
Sotheby's London has sold the George Daniels Space Traveller I for $4.6million (£3.6million), breaking records as the most expensive English watch to ever sell at auction.
Dr George Daniels, who is considered one of the greatest watchmakers of all time, spent most of his life on the Isle of Man.
According to the online watch-specialist magazine 'Hodinkee' the Space Traveller isn't the most complicated watch Daniels ever made, but it's revered as 'the most iconic and emblematic of his unique approach to watchmaking.'
“When I was a boy, going to the moon was the stuff of science fiction. The astronauts who went were brave chaps, the technology was the most advanced in the world and if the opportunity presented itself I would have liked to have gone with them.” (Clerizo, M., George Daniels, A Master Watchmaker and His Art, 2013, p.134)
