Culture Vannin celebrates Manx Shrove Tuesday tradition

Oie Innyd dates back to early 1800s

Culture Vannin has shed light on an unusual Shrove Tuesday tradition on the Isle of Man.

It's thought school children would lock their teacher out of the classroom on the morning of Oie Innyd, and then recite a rhyme, demanding that the teacher made the day a holiday!

Apparently the teacher, even if a stern disciplinarian, would often grant the children their wish.

This was recorded as taking place from at least the 1830s through to the 1870s across the Isle of Man, and there are northern and southern versions of the rhyme on Culture Vannin's Facebook page.
