Christmas comes to the capital

Plans gather pace for lights switch-on

Douglas is preparing to show its festive face, when this year's Christmas lights are turned on in just over two weeks time.

The streets of the capital will light-up on 23 November, signaling the start of Thursday late night shopping - and what traders hope will prove a high street bonanza.  

In keeping with tradition, a build-up ceremony aimed at families will be staged outside the town hall in Ridgeway Street, from 6.15pm.

Entertainment will include a sneak preview of this year's Gaiety pantomime Aladdin, and a performance by Young Actor of Mann Alexandra Slater.

Whatever the weather, the council's guaranteed snow will fall when Mayor Debbie Pitts throws the switch at 7pm - and Santa will be in his grotto.

With large crowds expected, the action will be shown on large screens in the street. Road closures and free parking in council car parks are also planned.
