Child care review to be made public

MHK says families need confidence in system

A political assessment of child care failings in the Island is to be made public.

Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson today (Tuesday) persuaded Tynwald to publish its social policy review of government's action plan, created following an independent investigation into the handling of vulnerable children cases.

The 18-month long probe, ordered by Tynwald in spring 2016, highlighted weaknesses in practices and called for politicians and senior officials to show greater leadership.

It heard evidence from 10 families who'd complained at their treatment by the authorities and called for changes to the way Island social workers deal with families in child protection cases.

Mr Allinson told the court it was important that vulnerable families on the Island could have confidence in the support available.

Tynwald unanimously agreed for the progress report to be made public and that the independent inquiry findings and government response be received.
