Chief minister weighs cost of strengthening Isle of Man voice in Westminster

Alfred Cannan cautious on proposal for permanent Manx post following UK Speaker's under-representation comments

The chief minister has told a Tynwald committee that establishing permanent Manx representation at Westminster would come at a cost of several hundred thousand pounds.

Alfred Cannan was responding to the Constitutional and Legal Affairs and Justice Committee, after the Speaker of the House of Commons suggested the Isle of Man is under-represented in the UK.

In November, Tynwald debated a report which recommended a series of constitutional reforms including stationing a permanent Isle of Man representative in Westminster.

Mr Cannan said it’s a difficult balance of weighing the financial cost against the potential impact:
