Kirrie Jenkins and Chris Thomas are the two looking to replace Alfred Cannan

MHKs Kirrie Jenkins and Chris Thomas have set out their plans as they seek to be the Island's next chief minister, replacing Alfred Cannan.

The House of Keys will vote next Tuesday, after the candidates set out contrasting approaches in a debate hosted by Manx Radio.

Mrs Jenkins called for a fresh, collaborative style of government, with priorities to stabilise public finances and essential services, strengthen the economy and communities, and streamline government. She said the new administration should agree its priorities together, rather than begin with a single candidate’s manifesto.

Mr Thomas argued that his experience would allow him to deliver change immediately. He highlighted plans for a new economic programme, prioritised budgeting and a long-term infrastructure plan, and said new and returning MHKs should combine their experience to get results.

The candidates were challenged on government spending, accountability, transparency, economic growth and preparing workers for changes brought by artificial intelligence.

They also discussed energy policy. Jenkins opposed a particular onshore wind project, while saying she supported renewable energy and smaller-scale options. Thomas called for a longer-term energy transition and further consideration of the island’s energy choices.

Both candidates said government needs to act quickly and restore public confidence, but differed on how to set priorities and how much existing experience should guide the new administration.
