Charities invited to apply for licence

Only handful of licences awarded per year

Charities wishing to promote themselves in the capital are being invited to apply.

Byelaws in Douglas mean organisations which hold collections and demonstrations on the high street must apply for one of only 28 licences issued each year.

Applications will be considered and allocated on individual merit.

Town Centre Manager Oliver Cheshire says public displays are a way to achieve 'heightened visibility' with the 'unfailingly generous' Manx public.

Last week, Newcastle City Council became the first UK local authority to place restrictions on high street charity employees, after complaints they were hassling shoppers.
