Changes on way for jury service

But chair withdraws database plans

Planned changes to the jury system have been approved by Tynwald.

Members voted in favour of increasing the size of a jury to 12 people for all cases involving a maximum sentence of more than ten years.

That number is currently only used for murder and manslaughter cases.

Members also approved the allowance of a majority verdict of ten jurors for such cases, the same as England and Wales.

The chairman of the select committee which looked at the jury system was East Douglas MHK Chris Robertshaw.

He announced he'd be withdrawing another recommendation, on setting up a centralised citizen database, when he spoke ahead of the vote:
