Castletown’s MHK has been asked to step down from his role as political member with responsibility for retail at the Department of Economic Development.
Richard Ronan says the decision was sparked by a battle in his constituency over the Callow’s Yard site.
This week, a public meeting was called in Castletown to discuss two planning applications that would convert commercial units into flats.
Mr Ronan says in order to fight the proposals, he’s been forced to give up his retail role within the department.
In a statement issued this morning, Mr Ronan says after a unanimous vote by commissioners and 170 residents at the meeting, he’s determined to fight the plans.
But he says that constituency concern has had to take precedence over his role in the department.
He met DED Minister John Shimmin yesterday to explain his position, and says Mr Shimmin will now take over the role.
Mr Ronan adds his decision won’t affect his other delegated responsibilities.
