Cannan's attempt to delay Assisted Dying Bill fails

Ayre and Michael MHK wanted to put debate off until November

Efforts to delay consideration of the Assisted Dying Bill have been rejected this afternoon.

Ayre and Michael MHK Alfred Cannan attempted to adjourn the debate until November.

He was seconded by Douglas Central MHK Chris Thomas.

Mr Cannan told Manx Radio he wanted more time to make the bill 'fit for purpose'.

Nine MHKs supported Mr Cannan’s idea but 14 voted against.

Members of the House of Keys have spent much of today considering the clauses of the Private Members Bill including discussing conscientious objection.

The house has now been adjourned until 10am tomorrow morning (26 June) where they'll resume discussions on clause nine of 14.

You can listen to the debate via Manx Radio's AM 1368 frequency, via DAB or by clicking HERE.
