Committee says current system not fit for purpose

A 'more workable' system for Legislative Council elections is to be advocated by a Tynwald committee.

Members of the Standing Orders commitee are said to have 'different views' about the best way to nominate new MLCs - but all agree the current system is not fit for purpose.

A report completed last year has now surfaced, along with two recommendations for the House of Keys.

The main suggestion is that elections are conducted through parliamentary standing orders, rather than statutory law, in future - thereby increasing flexibility and the scope for improvements where required.

Keys members will be asked to approve the recommendations in a future sitting.

It comes in the same week that Tony Wild, a long-serving member of the Council, tendered his resignation from Tynwald on grounds of ill health.
