Hooper claims it's just 'moving the deckchairs'
The health and social care minister has criticised an MHK who wants more political oversight of Manx Care saying it’s ‘misguided’.
Douglas Central’s Chris Thomas wants a political member to be placed on the Manx Care Board who would then field questions and queries from Tynwald.
He’ll take his idea to the court later this month; it's been backed by Garff MHK Andrew Smith.
Mr Thomas wants the Council of Ministers to:
- Reform how the healthcare professions are engaged to secure continuous improvement of healthcare
- Ensure that all executive members of Manx Care are appointed in accordance with the Public Services Commission Act 2015
- Nominate a member of Tynwald to shadow the Manx Care board for election by Tynwald at the November 2024 sitting of Tynwald
- Bring principles for drafting a bill to amend or replace existing legislation to clarify the governance and division of responsibilities of the Department of Health and Social Care and Manx Care for debate at the January 2025 sitting of Tynwald

But Lawrie Hooper told Manx Radio he doesn’t understand what it would achieve.
He also told Manx Radio he doesn't think a decision to cut elective surgery procedures for up to six months would have been taken by Manx Care if it had been given any other options.
He told us while the move is technically a decision made by the health body it's come at the 'behest of those on high':
Mr Thomas' motion will go before Tynwald when the court sits on 15 October.
