Call for government action on Liverpool landing stage

The Island's passenger watchdog TravelWatch is calling for action from government to secure the future of the landing stage at Liverpool's Pier Head.

According to the group the structure, built in 1977, will need to be replaced by 2017.

The port's owner, Peel Holdings, wants to replace the stage, as it is now also used as Liverpool's cruise liner terminal, but expects the Steam Packet to sign up to a long-term agreement and possibly put up money up front

The original stage was financed by the Manx government, with the Packet repaying over 25 years.

Funding its replacement would cost around £15 million.
