By-election trial enters third week

It’s day 10 of the Douglas East by-election fraud trial.

Proceedings resume at 10.30am at Douglas Courthouse this morning (Monday).

Four people: 40 year-old Gail Corrin from Douglas, 51 year-old Geoffrey Callister from Port Erin and Kerry Rothwell and Catherine Liggins, both from Onchan, all deny a range of charges.

In court on Friday, a police officer said she was misled into giving away her vote at the May 2010 election.

PC Emily McLean said she signed a form at her door after being told it would stop canvassers bothering her.

But the form actually allowed someone to vote on her behalf as a 'proxy'.

She said the man at her door fitted the description of Charles ‘Buster’ Lewin of Crosby, who has already admitted conspiracy to affect legal purposes by improper means, conspiracy to steal and conspiracy to forge a document.
