Bronze gallantry medal for RNLI helm

First time Port St Mary given award

A Bronze Medal is to be awarded to Port St Mary RNLI helm Richard Leigh for superb boat handling, seamanship, and courage during the rescue of a yacht in rough seas in very demanding circumstances.

Nine letters of thanks will be presented to the volunteer crew for helping to save three people whose lives were in danger when their stricken vessel’s propeller became entangled.

The dramatic rescue took place in adverse conditions close to the Manx coastline in November last year and involved both of the Port St Mary station’s lifeboats.

The yacht had been blown dangerously close to rocks and due to its position in limited depth of water and breaking seas the all-weather rescue craft was unable to approach.

Helm Richard Leigh on the inshore vessel was able to reach the three crew members and take them to safety.

He's been awarded a bronze medal for his part in the rescue with letters of appreciation for Chris Hill, Daniel Grace plus Mike and Sarah Keggen. 

It's the first time a gallantry award will be presented to Port St Mary RNLI.
