Big rise in November inflation

Air fares to blame, says government

A spike in inflation last month is being blamed on a large rise in air fares.

As measured by the Consumer Prices Index, it jumped from 0.9% in October to 3.2% in November.

For air travel over the Christmas and New Year period, prices have increased by 46% compared to 12 months ago, although travel booked three months
in advance is also higher than last year.

Recreation and culture has also contributed strongly to the increase in inflation, according to government, particularly alcohol bought from pubs and bars.

The remaining categories have remained broadly similar to the previous month in their contribution to inflation.
