"The wound heals but the scar remains."

That's the powerful message from a domestic abuse campaigner who is hoping to help raise awareness of the issue on the Isle of Man.

Diana Parkes' daughter Joanna Simpson, who grew up on the Island, was killed by her estranged husband 14 years ago after suffering years of abuse.

She's been speaking at a two-day conference on the topic organised by Victim Support and the Domestic Abuse Forum:

Campaigner David Challen has also been speaking at the two-day event which started yesterday (11 September).

His mum Sally was convicted of his father's murder in 2010.

That conviction was quashed in 2019 on the grounds of diminished responsibility after the 40 years of abuse she suffered was revealed.

The case created national and international awareness of coercive control.

He's been telling Manx Radio why he feels it's important to share his family's story:

The conference continues today (12 September) celebrating the work that Victim Support Isle of Man has done over the past 25 years; a new five-year strategy will also be unveiled.

If you, or someone you know, is suffering domestic abuse you're being urged to contact police.
