The role of His Majesty’s Attorney General in the Isle of Man is to act as the legal adviser to the Lieutenant Governor, the Council of Ministers, government departments and statutory boards.
Government says the move will mark the end of a long career providing 'expertise and counsel' including more than a decade of public service in Crown appointments, firstly as Solicitor General in 2015 and then Attorney General in 2022.
Mr Wannenburgh says he's 'enormously grateful' for his time as Attorney General, but he feels after nearly 11 years serving as a Crown officer the 'time is right for renewal and with the General Election looming it seems an appropriate opportunity to hand the baton to another'.
He adds: ‘It has been the privilege of my professional life to have served as a Crown officer, but of course I could not have done so without the support of many others, particularly my colleagues in Chambers to whom I am indebted.’
The chief minister has thanked Mr Wannenburgh on behalf of the Council of Ministers for his 'dedicated service' as HM Solicitor General from 2015 to 2022, and as HM Attorney General from 2022 to 2026.
Alfred Cannan says: ‘Throughout his tenure in these positions, the Council of Ministers has greatly valued his support, together with the frank and considered advice he has provided on a wide range of matters of importance to the Isle of Man. His professionalism, integrity and commitment to public service have been greatly valued, and his contribution of real benefit to the work of Government.
‘We extend our very best wishes to Walter for all of his future endeavours and a long and fulfilling retirement.’
The Isle of Man Government says recruitment process for the Island's next Attorney General will take place on and off-Island throughout this month and next.
