Apology to doctor dismissed after whistleblowing 

Chief minister's 'deep regret' over treatment of Dr Rosalind Ranson

The chief minister has apologised to the Isle of Man’s former medical director for the harm she suffered after whistleblowing.

Alfred Cannan made an urgent statement on the outcome of Doctor Rosalind Ranson’s employment tribunal in the House of Keys today (9 May).

It’s ruled she should receive more than £3 million in compensation which will be paid for from the public purse.

Mr Cannan said the judgement made ‘uncomfortable reading’ adding that the actions of those involved did not ‘reflect well’ on the professionalism of the civil service:

But Douglas North MHK John Wannenburgh queried whether the chief minister had apologised directly to Dr Ranson: 

The chief minister also confirmed that Tynwald will be asked to support an independent investigation into the handling of the employment tribunal. 

Mr Cannan told fellow MHKs that the public must be able to have confidence that government is conducting itself ‘properly’ when facing judicial challenge - noting the ‘significant amount of criticism’ surrounding the Department of Health and Social Care’s handling of the case:
