Tynwald sets greenhouse gas target

Strategy drives five year action plans

An ambitious target to cut greenhouse gases in the Island by 80% by the year 2050 has been endorsed by Tynwald.

The court today (20 July) approved a climate change mitigation strategy focusing on greater efficiency, cleaner energy and a resilient economy.

North Douglas MHK Ralph Peake, member of DEFA with responsibility for environment, safety and health, said it was further evidence the Island remained committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels.

The strategy approved today is the first in a series of five-year action plans, divided into measures that both the current administration and next government should carry out.

These include development of new buildings using low carbon sources of energy, draft proofing and insulation to reduce energy bills and a move to encourge more people to cycle or walk to work and school.

Minister Richard Ronan told Tynwald it showed the Isle of Man was serious about its role in the global community.
