Adequate drainage on Castle Street despite temporary flooding, says Manx Utilities

Brown water affected part of Douglas high street after intense rainfall

Manx Utilities says drainage along a section of Douglas high street which was recently affected by flooding is 'adequate'.

An area on Castle Street was affected by a large pool of brown standing water following a severe downpour on 12 March.

Douglas Council said the water arose from a gully which had been 'sealed off' by the MUA for safety reasons. See HERE.

In a statement to Manx Radio, Manx Utilities says: "Following an intense spell of severe weather, temporary flooding occurred in the area of Castle Street, Douglas.

"A Met Office yellow warning for heavy rain and strong south westerly winds was in place at the time, and similar surface water issues were seen elsewhere across the Island.

"A Manx Utilities wastewater network maintenance team, who were nearby, went to the area after the heavy rain and helped to clear the road surface of grit, twigs and debris.

"A nearby gully had been isolated earlier in the year after third party works had damaged an underground electricity cable. However, a second gully in close proximity remains fully operational and continues to provide drainage for this location. Highway drainage is not the responsibility of Manx Utilities."

All in all, the MUA says the temporary flooding resulted from the 'sudden and intense' rainfall, adding that it is 'unlikely that the isolated gulley had a significant impact on the area’s drainage capacity'.

It says: 'Earlier discussions between the relevant organisations confirmed that adequate drainage provision remained in place'.
