Accidental death recorded at inquest of Peel man

A verdict of accidental death was recorded at the inquest of a Peel man yesterday.

Thirty-four-year-old Alex Williamson, of Charles Street Close, was involved in a collision with a car outside the Hawthorn pub, on the Peel to Douglas road, on March 28 last year.

He was taken to Noble's Hospital but died from his injuries later that day.

Mr Williamson was riding his motorcycle home from work when he attempted to overtake a Ford Mondeo.

He collided with a Renault Modus which was coming out of the pub's car park.

The inquest heard Mr Williamson and the driver of the Renault were unable to see each other, their views being blocked by the other car and a telegraph pole respectively.

The collision took place in a derestricted zone where overtaking is permitted.

A police officer giving evidence at the inquest suggested the 50mph zone nearby be extended past the pub.

The coroner of inquests agreed, adding the Department of Infrastructure should also consider banning overtaking there, to try and prevent further accidents.
