Minister confirms new poles part of wider residential speed limit rollout, with school-specific signage still to follow

A total of 68 new poles have been installed in connection with proposals to implement  20mph signage have been installed in Douglas and Onchan since 1 May 2025, according to the infrastructure minister.

Responding to a Tynwald written question from Onchan MHK Rob Callister, Dr Michelle Haywood said the new poles support the area-wide introduction of 20mph limits in residential areas.

While some are near schools, they are not specifically part of school-related safety infrastructure.

Dr Haywood confirmed that 22 additional poles will be needed to fit ‘wig-wag’ signs at all schools in the area, but so far only the sockets have been installed.

The Department of Infrastructure says final speed limit decisions will be made following public consultation feedback.
